NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS AWARDS $36M TO SUPPORT ARTS, CULTURE & HERITAGE ORGANIZATIONS STATEWIDE

NEW YORK — With this year’s grant program, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) supports the arts, culture and heritage organizations that enliven New York State’s communities and further solidify the State's position as a global cultural center. NYSCA today announced it has awarded $36 million in 1,899 grants to 1,242 New York State non-profit organizations.

“Whether pairing media artists with students through an in-school program in the Capital region, or assisting New York City’s dance companies and choreographers to secure affordable rehearsal space, or providing local community organizations and artists an opportunity to receive state funding, the programs and activities NYSCA supports are as diverse as the state’s population and its interests,” said Mr. Aby Rosen, Chair, NYSCA. “On behalf of Governor Cuomo and the New York State Council on the Arts, I congratulate all the grant recipients and thank them for their tremendous impact on community vitality, the quality of life of our citizens and visitors and the state’s economic prosperity.”

NYSCA awards grants in 16 program areas representing a cross-section of artistic disciplines and funding goals. Across the disciplines, grants support arts, culture and heritage programming; organizational operations; individual artists’ projects; additional granting opportunities, known as ‘regrants’ and services to the field. The agency also administers $674,000 in federal grant funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

This year, as part of the agency’s broad, statewide portfolio:

  • 60 organizations will present concerts, festivals and other programs to pass on their communities’ traditional arts, culture and heritage to future generations with support from NYSCA’s Folk Arts program.

  • 467 music, dance and theatre organizations statewide will produce and present public performances with support from NYSCA’s Music, Dance and Theatre programs.

  • 37 organizations will expand their operations to address a critical need within the organization. This pilot Workforce Investment support is a component of NYSCA’s Regional Economic Development Council efforts.

  • Approximately 1,400 additional grants will be awarded through NYSCA’s Decentralization program. Administered by 29 partner organizations across the state, the Decentralization program regrants approximately $2.2M to local community organizations and artists that do not receive direct NYSCA support.
