Lake Placid 2015-’16 Fall/Winter Event Season Schedule

(Nov. 12, 2015) --- Below is a rundown of many of the events on ORDA’s fall/winter 2015-’16 events’ calendar for your planning purposes. Dates and schedules are subject to change.

 

Dec. 1-5, 2015 – FIL Luge World Cup. International luge racing returns to Lake Placid. The doubles and men’s races will be held on Dec. 4, while the women’s and team relay competitions will take place on Dec. 5. (Credential request form HERE)

 

Jan. 4-9, 2016 – IBSF World Cup Bobsled and Skeleton. Racing starts on Jan. 8 with two-man bobsled and men and women’s skeleton. Then on Jan. 9, the world’s best women bobsledders and four-man teams will tackle the Mt. Van Hoevenberg 20-curve course. (Credential request form HERE)

 

Jan. 14-16 – FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup. The world’s best freestyle skiers return to Lake Placid and Wilmington to compete in the FIS freestyle World Cup. Action will take place at the Olympic Jumping Complex and Whiteface Mountain. The jumping complex will host the men and women’s aerials competitions, where athletes twist and soar as high as 60 feet in the air before landing, while Whiteface will be the site of the moguls’ competitions. Feb. 19-21 – Lake Placid has a well-deserved reputation for world-class alpine skiing, but it also has some of the best Nordic skiing in the United States. The Lake Placid region has plenty to offer Nordic skiers and winter enthusiasts of all ages and abilities with its vast array of cross country trails. So whether you’re a beginner skier or an experienced racer, the place to be is in Lake Placid for its second annual Nordic Festival.

 

Feb. 21 – Lake Placid Loppet and Kort Loppet. Nordic skiers will converge on the cross-country ski trails at Mt. van Hoevenberg to compete in the 33rd Lake Placid Loppet. Inclement weather claimed last winter’s event. Open to classical and freestyle skiers, the Loppet is a 50k race (31-miles) through the 1980 Olympic ski trails. The vertical climb is just under 3,700 feet.

 

The 25k Kort Loppet, also open for classical and freestyle skiers, features a vertical climb of 1,850 feet. The Lake Placid Loppet is part of the American Ski Marathon Series.

 

March 13 – ECHL Hockey. Come watch the NHL stars of tomorrow play in the ECHL match up. The Adirondack Thunder are an affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames, while the Royals are an affiliate to the Philadelphia Flyers.

 

March 16-20 – Lake Placid, N.Y. and Wilmington, N.Y. will play host to the 2016 United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championship™. The five-day long event brings together athletes from across all four disciplines of alpine Skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding as they convene in the region for competitions that will determine the top collegiate teams across the nation.

             

March 18-19 – ECAC Men’s Hockey Championship Tournament. The ECAC Hockey championships for a third straight postseason. The winner of this tournament receives an automatic bid to play in the NCAA championship tournament. The ECAC Men’s Hockey championship tournament will be played on the famed Herb Brooks Arena 1980 Rink.

 

March 25-26 – The NCAA Div. III Men’s Ice Hockey National Championships. For a record the sixth time, the nation’s top DIII men’s ice hockey team will be crowned in Lake Placid. The nation’s top four teams will square off in the semi-finals, March 25, and the 2016 national champion will be crowned the following evening. The three games will be played in the famed 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena.

 

April 3-7 – Lake Placid Miracle on Ice Fantasy Camp. Join players from the gold medal winning 1980 USA Hockey Team and participate in their second annual fantasy camp in wondrous and magnificent Lake Placid, host city of those historic 1980 Winter Games. Connect with the greatest sports moment of all time. Enjoy the competition. Meet and get to know players from that greatest of all teams in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that is Lake Placid. Skate in the 1980 Rink -Herb Brooks Arena at the Lake Placid Olympic Center where we beat the Russians and shocked the sports and political worlds.

 

Other events this fall and winter include Whiteface opens for the 2015-’16 skiing and riding season (weather/conditions permitting), Nov. 27; Continental Cup Nordic Combined, Dec. 15-19; Miracle Holiday Classic Hockey Tournament, Dec. 18-20; New Year’s Ski Jumping, Dec. 28; ISI Figure Skating Competition, Jan. 7-10; Northwood Hockey Tournament, Jan. 14-17; USSA Cross Country Super Tour & NENSA Eastern Cup, Jan. 26-31; 36th Annual Empire State Winter Games, Feb. 4-7; Harlem Globetrotter Basketball World Tour, Feb. 16; IBSF North American Cup Bobsled & Skeleton, March 7-26

Established in 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) was created by the State of New York to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface, Belleayre and Gore Mountain ski areas; the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; the Olympic speedskating oval, Olympic jumping complex and Olympic arena.
