MEDIA ADVISORY FOR TODAY, AUGUST 11

Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count August 11

Seventh Annual DEC-Sponsored Event

What: The 7th annual Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count will take place at multiple sites along the banks and piers of the Hudson from the Capital Region to New York City on Saturday, August 11. During this family-friendly event, participants are invited to explore the wide variety of slippery, wriggly, and fascinating creatures usually hidden below the river’s surface. Sponsored by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Hudson River Estuary Program, the Great Hudson River Fish Count takes place at multiple sites along the banks and piers of the Hudson from the Capital Region to New York City.

When: Saturday, August 11, 2018. Times at specific sites vary according to the tides and are listed below.

Where: More than 19 sites along waterfronts from Hudson River Park Pier in Manhattan to Peebles Island State Park at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers in Waterford. (The schedule below indicates the sites, from south to north.)

Why: A primary goal of DEC’s work is to connect New Yorkers to nature. This annual event offers participants firsthand experience on the tidal Hudson River, with its diverse fishes and habitats influenced by tides, currents, and salinity.

A list of participating sites follows. For more information, visit the Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count page on DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/97891.html.
