Albany, NY – The New York State Office of Mental Health today announced the grand opening of Hutchings Psychiatric Center’s renovated Madison Street Clinic in downtown Syracuse. The clinic is now the largest adult outpatient clinic in the area and will be adding primary healthcare services to the existing behavioral health services provided by Hutchings Psychiatric Center.

“During Governor Cuomo’s Capitol for a Day in Syracuse, Hutchings Psychiatric Center held a roundtable discussion on the importance of integrated physical and mental healthcare. With the new primary care services to be offered by the Madison Street Clinic, we are making those words a reality,” said New York State Office of Mental Health Commissioner Dr. Ann Sullivan. “This clinic will enable our clients to take an active role in their personal recovery and treatment processes, in a modern and updated environment. I wish them the best of luck on that journey!”

Construction on the Madison Street Clinic began in June 2015 and involved asbestos abatement and the rehabilitation of the first floor of the three-story building. The $2 million renovation project added a new, welcoming lobby and reception area for all patients, as well as a fully-equipped primary care suite. The suite includes three outfitted exam rooms, a medication room, phlebotomy center, primary care provider office, and nursing manager office. Fire and security systems were also updated.

“Hutchings’ expansion of primary care services to its clients meets a crucial need in the delivery of comprehensive health care in our community. The addition of space for a peer-supported, shared decision-making program is a significant component in supporting clients’ own health care choices and outcomes,” said New York State Senator David J. Valesky. “I congratulate Dr. Cattalani and his staff on the opening of their renovated center.”

Hunter. “I want to thank Hutchings Psychiatric Center and the state Office of Mental Health for their hard work and vision making this much needed community resource a reality.”

The renovated facility now provides space for the clinic’s peer-supported shared decision making program, CommonGround. This program, developed by the Office of Mental Health, combines the efforts of peers, computer software and patients to support a client’s involvement in treatment decisions. Individuals are able to access this service directly before their psychiatrist appointment.

“We are very excited to be able to build upon and expand the Person-Centered, Whole-Health services that we offer our community,” said Hutchings Psychiatric Center Executive Director Dr. Mark Cattalani. “This expansion of our integrated services is not only an opportunity to offer better care, it is an obligation that we have to those we serve and one that we are very eager to meet.”

The clinic currently serves about 1,000 individuals with behavioral health needs and in the past, has been able to provide about 200 of those patients with additional comprehensive physical health care services. The updated facility now enables Hutchings to provide primary health care services to the majority of the clinic’s client base in an effort to better help Central New York residents coordinate their health care needs and improve population health.
