ALBANY – The Office of Mental Health (OMH) today announced that it plans to hire several hundred Mental Health Therapy Aides (MHTAs) over the next two years at locations throughout NYS. Eligible candidates must register for, and successfully complete, the MHTA Trainee Civil Service exam, scheduled for May 13, 2017. Registration for the MHTA Trainee exam ends March 29, 2017. To register, visit https://www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/announcements/oc/26-217.cfm “This is an exciting opportunity for those who want to pursue a career in healthcare because there is such an overwhelming need for Mental Health Therapy Aides across the state,” said OMH Commissioner Ann M. Sullivan, M.D. “These hardworking aides help the people we serve feel comfortable in their environment and master the skills they need to thrive in the community. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of people with mental illness.” A MHTA provides direct services and support to adults and children receiving inpatient or outpatient care at OMH’s 19 civil psychiatric centers. A MHTA provides a nurturing, safe, caring and supportive environment while helping individuals with mental illness develop skills they need to succeed after discharge. A MHTA has constant face-to-face interaction with individuals and their families in a wide variety of residential and community environments. MHTA Trainee salaries start at $30,461 and MHTAs are eligible for annual increases based on performance and years of service. MHTAs enjoy New York State’s excellent benefit package; complete with 12 paid holidays, generous time off, health insurance including dental and vision, as well as a defined benefit pension and deferred compensation plan. Interested candidates must have a High School diploma or GED to qualify. “The Office of Mental Health hires hundreds of people to fill these positions every year and for the first time we are opening the exam to those who possess NYS Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification. By adding this new option, our goal is to attract candidates who have chosen a career in healthcare and are passionate about serving those in need.” said J. Lynn Heath, Director of OMH’s Center for Human Resources Management. “There is a short window of opportunity to register for the exam and we are urging all interested candidates to sign up today.” While appointment to MHTA Trainee positions requires a H.S. diploma or GED only, candidates who possess a NYS Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification and one year of direct care experience are eligible to take the full-performance level Mental Health Therapy Aide exam. Candidates appointed off this eligible list have higher starting salaries ($33,972) and are not required to complete a traineeship.
