Plumbers and Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Peekskill, NY (November 25, 2013) -- The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local Union #21 of Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and  Ulster counties, New York Zone 1, will conduct a recruitment from December 2, 2013 through December 13, 2013 for 15 plumber & steamfitter apprentices and five refrigeration & air conditioning mechanic apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available in person only at Local Union #21 at 1024 McKinley Street, Peekskill, NY from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be returned in person by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Local Union # 21. Applicants must pay a non-refundable $10 processing fee by cash or money order. Please note: You may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

Applicants will take the SATB test, which will be administered by the New York State Department of Labor.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old - proof must be submitted at time of indenture.
  • Must have a high school or general equivalency diploma (GED) – must submit transcript of grades at time of indenture.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the work - must undergo a medical examination by a physician, paid for by the sponsor after acceptance into the program.
  • Must be a resident of Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess or Ulster county for six months prior to the application.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related training instruction.
  • Must take and pass a drug test at the sponsor's expense after selection as an apprentice and prior to starting employment.
  • Must submit a copy of DD-214 at time of selection, if claiming veteran status.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
