DEC Opens “Birth of the Blue Line” Exhibit

Historic Maps Show Evolution of Adirondack and Catskill Parks

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos will officially unveil a new exhibit featuring rare Adirondack and Catskills artifacts, including historic maps, antique survey equipment, field notebooks, and photographs that tell the story of creation of the Adirondack and Catskill parks.

The maps are replicas of original maps used 125 years ago to define Adirondack Park boundaries, and later, to the boundaries of the Catskill Park. Interpretive panels describing the history behind creating the Blue Line will also be available.

The exhibit, located in the first floor south hallway of the DEC central office building at 625 Broadway, Albany, will be open to the public during the agency’s normal business hours.


Who: 
DEC Commissioner Seggos will be joined by state and local elected officials and community partners.

When: Tuesday, June 27, at 11 a.m.

Where: DEC Central Office Building, 625 Broadway, Albany

PHOTO OPS: Antique surveying equipment will be on display, as well as original field notebooks and maps hand-drawn and hand-colored by noted Adirondack surveyor, Verplanck Colvin. 

*On street parking available or Broadway lot across from the main entrance of the building ($8 parking fee). Other options are Quackenbush Garage or Riverfront Garage.

*Visitors should check in at the security desk.
