STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK STATE COMPLETE COUNT COMMISSION CO-CHAIRS ON TRUMP BACKING DOWN ON ADDING CITIZENSHIP QUESTION ON THE CENSUS

From Jim Malatras, President, Rockefeller Institute of Government and Rossana Rosado, New York State Secretary of State:

“Finally, it appears that the 2020 Census will not include a question about citizenship. President Trump has abandoned his ill-fated quest to weaponize the census – just as we called on him to do after the Supreme Court ruled that his attempts were illegal.

“This is a victory for New Yorkers and all residents, as the Census can now be an accurate, fair and complete count of all residents—just as the Constitution requires.

“However, the President’s ill-formed crusade to add such a question may have already had a chilling effect which could discourage many residents from responding.

“Let there be no misunderstanding: Every New Yorker, regardless of their citizenship status, can and must fill out the census form without fear. Completing the census will not compromise anyone’s safety and privacy, regardless of their immigration status.

“The Complete Count Commission will continue its important work unabated. No matter what other hateful policies are imposed by this Administration in Washington, we will always stand up and ensure every New Yorker is counted."
