NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF STATE ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON LAKE ONTARIO MARINA RESILIENCY PROJECT IN TOWN OF IRONDEQUOIT

$233,000 Project Will Ensure that Sutter’s Marina Remains Functional and Open to Recreational Boaters

Community-Identified REDIProjects Selected after Expert Evaluation and Review

Total $300 Million Designated for Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Shoreline Communities

The New York State Department of State (DOS) announced today the start of construction of the second of three resiliency projects awarded to Monroe County, through the State’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI). Sutter’s Marina is located off Irondequoit Bay Front West County Park, on the western shore of Irondequoit Bay. The marina contains four docks, which provide approximately 160 boat slips. In addition to summer dockage, the Marina offers an onsite fuel station. Due to increased water levels of Lake Ontario, and during high water events, several structures at the marina, including the facilities marine fuel station, are susceptible to flooding, threatening to inhibit the Marina’s ability to operate. The REDI Commission awarded Monroe County $233,000 to upgrade Sutter’s Marina, ensuring that the facility remain open and functioning during times of high water.

New York State Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said, "New York remains focused on building a more resilient state with infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events and climate change. The investments made at Sutter’s Marina will minimize the impacts of Lake Ontario’s water level changes and ensure residents and visitors can enjoy safe and accessible boating access.”

Dormitory Authority of New York State President and CEO Reuben McDaniel III said, “DASNY is proud to support Governor Hochul’s vision for protecting and strengthening waterfront communities in Monroe County and throughout New York State that are impacted by climate change.  The Sutter’s Marina project, like so many others in the REDI program, helps reduce risk of weather damage and provides stability for the recreational activities that are so important to New York’s economy.”

Resiliency measures to be undertaken in this project will consist of demolishing existing structures at the Marina, while retaining select equipment for reuse (fuel tank and pump). Both the main operations building, and the fuel shed will be reconstructed within the same footprint of the existing building on raised concrete foundation slabs above the high-water and flood elevations.

Senator Samra Brouk said, “I am grateful to the REDI Commission for their continued support of infrastructure projects here in Monroe County. The project at Sutter Marina will better ensure that the marina can remain open during times of high water, which will only become more vital as our region continues to find ways to cope with the effects of climate change. I look forward to continuing to partner with the REDI Commission to ensure that our facilities are prepared to withstand changes to our environment, and working with my colleagues in the Senate to find common sense solutions to our climate emergency.

Assemblywoman Sarah Clark said, High water levels and storm surges continue to pose a threat to our shoreline communities. This investment to upgrade Sutter’s Marina in Irondequoit will help ensure safety for boaters and improve ease of access especially during times of high-water levels. Thank you to New York State and the REDI Commission for this investment into our local infrastructure.”

Irondequoit Acting Town Supervisor John Perticone said, “Monroe County’s Irondequoit Bay Park West is an invaluable recreational resource for the residents of Irondequoit and the surrounding area. The Town proudly supports resiliency projects that protect and enhance our recreational amenities, including Sutter’s Marina. We look forward to the planned improvements.”

In response to the extended pattern of flooding along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, New York State established REDI to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region. Five REDI Regional Planning Committees, comprised of representatives from eight counties (Niagara and Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego, and Jefferson and St. Lawrence) were established to identify local priorities, at-risk infrastructure and other assets, and public safety concerns. Through REDI, the State has committed up to $300 million, to benefit communities and improve resiliency in flood prone regions along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
