DIVISION OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND EMERGENCY SERVICES REMINDS NEW YORKERS TO PREPARE FOR SEVERE WEATHER AND EMERGENCIES DURING NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH |
|
The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services reminded New Yorkers that September is National Preparedness Month and urged residents everywhere to learn what they can do to be better prepared to protect their loved ones, homes and businesses, against natural and man-made emergencies or disasters.
John P. Melville, Commissioner of the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services said, “It is important that people know what to do during an emergency, make sure that proper emergency supplies are available at home and at work, and to be informed and aware of events that are going on or are forecast to occur. The best way to get emergency information is by subscribing to NY-ALERT, the State’s alert and notification system.” To subscribe and learn more about NY-ALERT, the State’s free, all-hazards alerting system, visit www.nyalert.gov. Kevin Wisely, Deputy Commissioner for Emergency Services and Director of the State Office of Emergency Management said, “No matter what season, emergency preparedness should be a priority for all New Yorkers,”. As the State plans to prepare for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Hermine, individuals should prepare their families, homes and businesses as well. We all need to do our part to be better prepare ourselves, our loved ones, and our pets for emergencies and disasters.” As part of its continuing efforts to provide tools and resources to prepare all individuals for any type of disaster, and to respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions, Governor Cuomo launched the Citizen Preparedness Corps Training in 2014. Trainings are led by the New York National Guard, working with experts from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control and also taught by volunteers from the American Red Cross. Since its inception, over 125,000 people from across the state have become better prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster.
