Lake Placid to Host 2022 US Biathlon National Championships

Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s New Biathlon Venue Ready for Competition

Lake Placid, N.Y. - The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and U.S. Biathlon announce today that Lake Placid, NY will host the US Biathlon National Championships at Mt. Van Hoevenberg on March 23-27, 2022.  The facility has recently undergone an exciting revitalization that will provide an all-new venue for these Championships, which were last held in Lake Placid in 1996. The National Championships will bring together the best junior and senior biathlon athletes in the United States, with over 100 competitors expected.

Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s upgrades include a new biathlon stadium featuring a 30-point range with Kuruvinen targets, a high-efficiency snowmaking system with reservoir, an additional 5km of competition trails certified to international standards, the recently constructed three-story Mountain Pass Lodge, and an exciting competition layout with ideal spectator viewing and access.  ORDA, US Biathlon, and NYSEF look forward to a quality competitive experience and celebration of sport.

“US Biathlon is thrilled with the new world-class venue at Mt. Van Hoevenberg,” said US Biathlon, CEO & President Max Cobb. “We are very excited to award the 2022 National Championships and bring our biathlon community together in Lake Placid. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s impressive modernizations.”

“Mt. Van Hoevenberg’s updated design allows us to host these National Championships in a way that is both exciting and accommodating for athletes, spectators, and the recreational public,” said ORDA President & CEO, Mike Pratt. “We are eager to welcome the US Biathlon National Championships back to Lake Placid.”

There are several local athletes who will be participating in the event. “I am so excited that Lake Placid will be hosting the 2022 US Biathlon National Championships- it’s a game changer,” said 2018 Olympic Biathlete and ORDA Ambassador, Maddie Phaneuf. “Being able to have Olympians skiing our venue alongside our local kids is an amazing and unique opportunity.”

An official race invitation and race registration will be made available by November 1st, 2021.

The Championships will be hosted by ORDA, the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF), and the Adirondack Sports Council, who is the local organizing committee of the World University Winter Games.  The Games, which include competitions among 12 winter sports including biathlon, are estimated to be twice the size of the 1980 Winter Olympics.  They will be held in the Lake Placid Region in January 2023.
