Need More Time to File Your NYS Tax Returns? Request an Automatic Extension

The NYS Tax Department offers assistance to taxpayers who need help applying for an extension of time

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminded Western New York taxpayers who need more time to file their state tax returns – whether due to the December 2022 snowstorm or for other reasons – that requesting an automatic extension of time to file is easy using the “Request an Extension” button on the Tax Department’s website at www.tax.ny.gov (search: extension).

“I grew up in Western New York and I know how devastating the Blizzard of ‘22 was for taxpayers throughout the region,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “The Tax Department wants to make filing tax returns as easy as possible for those affected by the storm.”

"We know the devastating impact the blizzard had on the entire Western New York region, and this extension opportunity will be welcome news to many who are still regaining their footing," said Senator Tim Kennedy. "I thank Governor Hochul and Commissioner Hiller for prioritizing this grace period, and I encourage those who may need additional time to file their taxes to apply for this extension."

New York State tax returns are due April 18. Taxpayers who need more time can file a simple extension request to extend the due date for filing their state taxes to October 16 for individual filers.

Individuals who need assistance filing for an extension can get help using the Tax Department’s easy online ask a question form.

The Tax Department will also work with taxpayers who must file late due to impacts of the storm to make sure they are not penalized for late filing.
