Sprinkler Fitters Recruit Apprentices

Buffalo, NY (October 28, 2013) – The Sprinkler Fitters Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local Union #669 (Western Region), will conduct a recruitment from November 4, 2013 through November 4, 2014 for five sprinkler fitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications may be obtained from the following locations from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications may also be requested by calling (800) 638-0592 or by e-mailing contactus@jatc.org.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of the trade, as determined by a medical examination, including drug screening at the expense of the sponsor, after an offer of employment.
  • Must be willing and able to perform the work as stated below, which entails regular lifting and climbing:
    • Working indoors and outdoors.
    • Working in trenches 8 feet below ground and working at heights of 100 feet or more.
    • Working with overhead piping, normally plastic or steel, ranging in size from 1 inch to 8 inches in diameter.
    • Working with underground pipes ranging in size from 4 inches to 16 inches in diameter.          
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from different job sites and related instruction.
  • Must be willing to travel to various locations and be away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.
  • Must provide proof of age, employment, education, licenses, and/or veteran status, upon offer or selection.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
