MEDIA ADVISORY FOR TODAY, OCTOBER 25

State and Federal Partners to Announce Completion of First Natural Gas Well Plugging Project

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos, Office of General Services Commissioner Jeanette Moy, and U.S. Department of the Interior Infrastructure Coordinator Winnie Stachelberg will hold an announcement in the Buffalo Southtowns today to announce the completion of the first “orphaned” gas well safely plugged in New York with federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding. The $25 million initiative works with landowners to identify and plug old fossil fuel infrastructure to protect communities, reduce methane and other climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions from escaping into the environment, and protect water quality.

The project was successfully completed near a commercial shopping plaza in the Erie County Town of Holland. Similar projects are also underway with landowner cooperation across Western, Central, and Northern New York. For more information: https://www.dec.ny.gov/energy/111211.html
