Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rock Tavern, NY (August 3, 2018) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund will conduct a recruitment from September 4, 2018 through September 3, 2019 for four carpenter apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person at the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY OR Carpenters Local 279 United Brotherhood of Carpenters, 10 Corporate Drive, Hopewell Junction, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants must have a valid Photo identification to obtain an application. Copies of the Photo Identification and social security card will be required after the offer of employment. All applications must be received no later than September 3, 2019.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after offer of employment and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required at the time application.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which may include:
    • Lifting and carrying objects at least 50 pounds.
    • Climbing and working off of scaffolds and ladders at various heights.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working under conditions of inclement weather-rain, snow, cold, heat and direct sunlight.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
    • Following established safety rules and regulations, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
    • Shaping and cutting materials using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
    • Assembling and fastening materials to make framework or props using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
    • Erecting scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
    • Installing structures and fixtures such as windows, frames, flooring and trim or hardware using carpenters hand and power tools.
  • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Zone 11, which includes the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction.
  • Applicants must be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of interview. If an applicant should not pass the entrance test, this does not qualify him/her from consideration.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after offer of employment and prior to indenture. If an applicant tests positive, he/she cannot reapply for one year.
  • Must take part in a person interview which will be conducted by a representative of the Training Center.
  • Must be willing to attend related instruction as required.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after offer of employment and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
