Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (May 17, 2013) - The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee, Millwrights Local Union #1163, will conduct a recruitment from May 2, 2013 through April 24, 2014 for 10 millwright apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the 10 openings listed for the millwright apprentices represent the total number for all regions – Capital, Central, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, North Country and Western.

Applications can be obtained at the following locations and times:

  • Olean - New York State Dept. of Labor One-Stop Office, 175 North Union St., Suite 4, Olean, NY 14760, the third Wednesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.;
  • Rochester - Empire State Carpenters Training Center, 21 Jet View Dr., Rochester, NY 14624, the third Tuesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.;
  • Binghamton - Local Union #277, 23 Market St., Binghamton, NY 13905, the second and third Wednesday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.;
  • Elmira - Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, 181 Industrial Park Rd., Horseheads, NY 14845, the second and third Wednesday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.;
  • Buffalo - Construction Industry Employers, 2660 Williams St., Cheektowaga, NY 14227, the first Tuesday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.;
  • Syracuse - Local Union #277, 3247 Vickery Rd., North Syracuse, NY 13212, the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.;
  • Watertown - New York State Dept. of Labor One-Stop Office, 1000 Coffeen Street, Watertown, NY 13601, the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Utica - New York State Dept. of Labor One-Stop Office, 207 Genesee St., Suite 202, Utica, NY 13501, the first Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
  • Plattsburg - Local Union #291, 23 Elm Street, Plattsburg, NY 12901, the third Thursday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Albany - Albany Training Center, 27 Warehouse Row, Albany, NY 12205, every Thursday of every month from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This schedule is in effect throughout the recruitment period, excluding legal holidays. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  Proof is required at time of indenture. Signed statement must be submitted at time of application.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.).  Proof is required at time of indenture. Signed statement must be submitted at time of application.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by signed applicant statement submitted at time of application. A millwright installs, maintains, repairs, removes and transports all manner of mechanical equipment, and therefore:
  • Must be able to work from heights, in confined spaces and underground.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, and all types of indoor conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
    • Must submit a signed statement attesting to the minimum qualifications at the time of application.
    • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and school. A signed statement attesting to this must be submitted at time of application.
    • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Local 1163, which includes all counties in New York State except Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester, and New York City.
    • Must provide a copy of DD 214 (if applicant is a veteran) after an offer of employment or indenture is made.
    • Must pass a drug test, paid for by the JATC, given at time of employment.  
    • Must take the UBC Qualifying Math and Measuring test.  Score to be part of the evaluation.
    • Must participate in an interview, if deemed eligible

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
