Long Island City, NY (May 22, 2013) -- The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the Elevator Industry Local Union #3 will conduct a limited recruitment from May 20, 2013 through June 3, 2013, or until 750 applications have been distributed, for 75 elevator servicer and repairer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications may be obtained from the JATC of the Elevator Industry located at 35-40 36^th Street, 2^nd floor, Long Island City, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding Monday, May 27, 2013) during the recruitment period or until 750 applications have been distributed.  The application obtained will be numbered.  When returned, the application must correspond with the name and number of the application given to the applicant at time of pick-up.  All individuals requesting an application must present a picture ID card issued by a city, state, or federal government agency.

All applications must be returned via the U.S Postal Service “Certified Mail-Return Receipt Requested” and postmarked no later than June 10, 2013.

Please note:  A $15.00 testing fee must be paid to the JATC, in the form of a money order, on the day of testing.  You may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.  The testing fee will also be waived for the following:  applicants on public assistance; applicants from Non-Traditional Employment for Women, Helmets to Hardhats, Construction Skills, NAACP Special Employment Services Division, New York City Housing Authority’s Resident Employment Services Department, Consortium for Worker Education, and other Minority and/or Women’s Employment Organizations accepted and approved by the JATC.     

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
• Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by the applicant’s statement. The work required includes the following:
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Climbing.
  • Working from heights up to 1,000 ft.
  • Working with electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment, and rotating      machinery.
  • Must successfully complete a medical evaluation and controlled substance screening process as a condition of employment – paid by the JATC.
    • Must be a legal resident of the United States.
    • Must take a General Math & Reading Comprehension Test (TABE) - administered by the JATC.

  Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt Affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
