The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today showed one of the newest vans to join the Access-A-Ride fleet, the Ford E-450. The 20 vans are painted New York State blue and gold with one test van featuring the “Q-Straint One All-in-One Wheelchair Securement Station.”

The new wheelchair securement system currently being tested includes improved visual design and prominent yellow markers allow drivers to quickly and safely strap in wheelchairs and prevent them from moving. Rubberized hooks and buckles and rugged surface texture provide maximum durability. Fifteen vans with this feature are expected to join the fleet this year.

“We are constantly looking for ways to improve the Access-A-Ride experience while prioritizing safety,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer and Senior Advisor Quemuel Arroyo. “I’m excited for customers to experience the convenience of the wheelchair securement system as more vans join our fleet later this year.”

“Access-A-Ride continues to make major progress in customer satisfaction, and these vans will ensure a smoother and safer securement process” said MTA Vice President of Paratransit Chris Pangilinan. “Paratransit is the lifeblood for many New Yorkers, including myself, enabling all of us to access all of the great opportunities that the city has to offer.”

These vans feature seven seats with three wheelchair positions and four stationary seats and one flip seat. The 20 vans are in use throughout the city.
