Take Advantage of Free Resources Available to Help You Meet Your Tax Filing Obligations before Tonight’s Deadline

NYS Tax Department offers free e-filing and extension options, simple online bill pay, extended customer service hours, and convenient refund tracking

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded all New Yorkers of the free resources available to help them file an accurate return ahead of tonight’s filing deadline. Federal and New York State personal income tax returns, as well as any tax owed, must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. tonight.

“I encourage New Yorkers who haven’t already met their filing obligation to take advantage of the many resources available to help them do so securely and efficiently,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “Free e-filing software is available through the Tax Department’s website, and customer service representatives are available until 7:30 p.m. tonight to answer last-minute filing questions.”

Free e-file options

Taxpayers with adjusted gross household incomes of $64,000 or less can access software at www.tax.ny.gov to file both their federal and state tax returns for free (search: free file).

The Tax Department provides a highly secure, encrypted system designed to protect a filer’s personal and confidential information. About 92 percent of all personal income tax returns in New York are filed electronically.

E-filed returns are 20 times less likely to contain an error, which can delay processing and refunds. In addition, taxpayers who e-file and choose direct deposit can receive their refund twice as fast as those who file on paper and choose to have a check mailed to their home. A paper check can take an extra week or more.

File an extension

Rather than file in a rush, request an automatic six-month extension if you won’t be able to meet tonight’s filing deadline. An extension doesn’t provide more time to pay taxes owed; you must pay the properly estimated amount of tax owed when requesting the extension.

Extended call center hours

The Tax Department call center (518-457-5181) will remain open until 7:30 p.m. tonight to assist taxpayers with last-minute tax return filing questions. Representatives expect to take about 15,000 calls today alone. The call center’s normal hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“Our online apps and guidance, along with our knowledgeable customer service representatives, can help ensure that New Yorkers file securely, accurately, and on time,” added Acting Commissioner Manion.

Check your refund online 24/7

Taxpayers who’ve already filed their returns can check the status of their refund anytime online at www.tax.ny.gov. The Income Tax Refund Status app is updated daily and provides the same information available from the automated refund telephone line (518-457-5149) and call center representatives.
