DEC TO HOST ‘GET OUTDOORS & GET TOGETHER DAY’ CELEBRATION ON JUNE 11 AT SCAROON MANOR CAMPGROUND AND DAY USE AREA

Free Family-Friendly Activities Available

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Region 5 is hosting 'Get Outdoors & Get Together Day' on June 11 at Scaroon Manor Campground and Day Use Area, 8728 State Route 9, Pottersville, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As recently announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, Get Outdoors & Get Together Day will bring people of all abilities, ages, identities, and backgrounds together for fun, healthful activities as part of the Governor's initiative to broaden the diversity of users and ensure inclusivity of access to public lands. Details can be found on DEC's website

Free family activities include: 

  • A Bird ID walk on a partially accessible foot trail and “make your own binoculars” activity; 
  • Canoeing, kayaking, or tandem kayaking; 
  • An off-site hike up nearby Mt. Severance or shorter hikes on the Scaroon Manor grounds; 
  • Fishing with help from an Environmental Conservation Police Officer; 
  • Campfire-building demonstrations with a DEC Forest Ranger; 
  • Tree ID walks with a DEC Forester; 
  • Adirondack wildlife education; and 
  • Leave No TraceTM education and activities.

Equipment will be provided for fishing and paddling. Attendees may also bring their own fishing poles and equipment for personal use. If you plan to join the off-site hike, please wear sturdy shoes and bring a backpack, water bottle, and snack. Hike participants will meet at the trailhead – transportation will not be provided. 

 

Participants are encouraged to Love Our New York Lands all year by practicing Leave No Trace™ principles and by recreating safely, sustainably, and hiking in suitable conditions based on weather and experience level.
