Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rock Tavern, NY (October 6, 2016) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund will conduct a recruitment from October 27, 2016 through October 26, 2017 for four lather (carpenter) apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. 

 

Please note that the four openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Capital District and Hudson Valley regions.

 

Applications must be obtained in person at the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

 

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test, at the time of application.

 

Applicants must attest to the qualifications, as listed below, in a signed statement. They must also provide required documents of proof when offered a position. Failure to provide the required proofs will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

 

The Committee requires that applicants:

 

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide valid photo identification, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of a lather (carpenter), which may include:
    • Lifting and carrying materials that weigh more than 50 pounds.
    • Climbing and working off of scaffolds and ladders at various heights.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods of time.
    • Following established safety rules and regulations, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
    • Shaping and cutting materials using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
    • Assembling and fastening materials using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
    • Building or repairing cabinets, doors, framework, floors, and other wooden fixtures using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
    • Erecting scaffolding and ladders.
    • Installing structures and fixtures using hand tools and power tools.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund, which includes the following counties: Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Must attend related instruction at a Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
