NEW YORK STATE TREE LIGHTING IN HARLEM THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9

Live Music, Visit From Santa, and More

New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Acting Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced the annual New York State Holiday Tree Lighting at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building Plaza will be held on Thursday, December 9. The evening full of free family fun and live entertainment, including musical performances, a visit from Santa, train rides, giveaways, and free hot chocolate courtesy of Starbucks, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Three New York State agencies — Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks), Department of Transportation (DOT), and OGS —  are collaborating in the spirit of the season to deliver a beautiful tree that will light up the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building Plaza in Harlem during the holidays.

State Parks is providing the tree from Robert H. Treman State Park in Ithaca. In an effort to improve and maintain the health of a heavily forested section of the park, the chosen tree had already been slated for removal. The DOT will transport the tree approximately 230 miles from the Southern Tier Region to Upper Manhattan.

“We are thrilled to continue New York State’s longtime, annual tradition of lighting a tree for the holidays at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building Plaza in Harlem,” Acting Commissioner Moy said. “I want to thank all the generous sponsors of this celebration, as well as my colleagues at OGS and our partners at State Parks and DOT whose hard work makes this event possible. With live performances and a visit from Santa, the tree lighting on December 9 creates a wonderful opportunity for friends, family, and neighbors in the community to come together and celebrate the holiday season.”

State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “State Parks is happy to provide this tree to help celebrate the season in New York City. The selective cutting of this spruce tree will help create holiday cheer in New York and promote forest health at Robert H. Treman State Park in the Southern Tier.”

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, “The holidays are a time to celebrate with friends and family, reflecting on the past year and preparing for the promise and hope of the New Year. The New York State Department of Transportation is proud to once again partner with the Office of General Services and State Parks to deliver the centerpiece of the holiday tree lighting celebration. We hope that this annual event brings families and all members of our New York State community joy during this holiday season.”

The public is invited to bring their family and friends to this free event, which is being organized by OGS in collaboration with promoter Greg Mays of Harlem Presents.
