Insulation & Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (September 11, 2019) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Abatement Workers, Local Union #12A, will conduct a recruitment from October 23, 2019 through November 5, 2019 for five Hazardous Materials Removal Worker apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 5 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Long Island and New York City regions of the state.

This is a limited-application recruitment. Only 50 applications will be distributed, on a first-come, first-served basis. The recruitment will be offered for 10 business days or until 50 applications have been issued, whichever comes first.

Applications must be completed and returned in person at Local Union #12A, 47-14 32nd Place, Long Island City, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period. Applications must be received no later than November 5, 2019.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have at least an 8th grade education.
  • Must pass the New York State and New York City Department of Environmental Protection Asbestos Exam during the apprenticeship.
  • Applicants must have a valid NYS Department of Motor Vehicles identification, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship, in order to obtain the New York State and New York City Department of Environmental Protection Asbestos certificate.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
