Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

New York City, NY (June 17, 2015) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the New York City District Council of Carpenters will conduct a recruitment from July 8, 2015 through June 8, 2016 for 25 carpenter (piledriver/dockbuilder) apprentices; 20 linoleum, resilient tile, and carpet layer apprentices; and 10 cabinet maker apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person at the NYCDCC Labor Technical College, 395 Hudson Street (Clarkson Street entrance), New York City, NY, on the second Wednesday of each month, excluding December 9, 2015 and January 13, 2016.  Applications will be available from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.  There will be no admittance after 7:30 a.m.  Only the applicant will be allowed to complete an application.  In order to receive an application, applicants must provide government-issued picture identification.  Applications will include an instruction sheet regarding the requirements to return the application. 

Applications are only accepted by mail.  Applications must be accompanied by proof of age, proof of education, proof of U.S citizenship or legal right to work in the U.S., and a copy of the applicant’s Social Security card.  Original, completed applications and clear copies of the required documents must be mailed to: JATC ______  (the trade being applied for, choose one) Apprentice Applications, 395 Hudson Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10014.  All documents must be postmarked no later than five business days from the date that the application was provided.  Failure to comply will disqualify the individual from further consideration.  Applicants that do not provide proper documentation in a timely manner will be disqualified from further consideration and notified by mail.

Applicants that comply with the previous application steps will be required to attend a four-hour initial orientation.  Applicants must arrive on time.  All applicants must bring originals of all of the verification documents previously mentioned (including government-issued picture identification).  Every applicant in attendance will be scheduled for an interview at a future date.  Applicants that do not arrive on time to their scheduled interview will be disqualified from further consideration. 

As apprentices are requested by signatory contractors, the top ranking candidates will be notified to attend a final orientation.  Applicants must arrive on time to the final orientation with proper documentation.  Those that do not comply will be disqualified from further consideration.  A conditional offer of employment will be made to all attendees of the final orientation.  These applicants will be required to submit to a substance abuse screening, within 48 hours, at a collection site designated by the JATC.  The substance abuse screening will be paid for by the JATC.    

The Committee requires that applicants:

§  Must be at least 17 years old at the time of application.

§  Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  Proof, in the form of an original document or a stamped and sealed copy, must be provided at the time of application. 

§  Must pass a physical examination, at the expense of the sponsor, within 30 days of acceptance into the apprenticeship program. 

§  Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to work in the U.S. at the time of application.

§  Must provide original Social Security card at the time of application.

§  Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.  Carpenter (piledriver/dockbuilder) apprentices can expect to travel throughout New York and New Jersey for work.  Linoleum, resilient tile, and carpet layer apprentices can expect to travel throughout New York State.  Cabinet maker apprentices can expect to travel throughout New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
