Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (September 11, 2019) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Bricklayers & Allied Craft Workers JAC Local Union #1, will conduct a recruitment from October 25, 2019 through September 25, 2020 (excluding July 2020 and August 2020) for 10 Bricklayer-Mason apprentices; five Stone Mason apprentices; 10 Pointer, Caulker, & Cleaner apprentices; and five Plasterer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44th Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the following dates: 10/25/19, 11/22/19, 12/20/19, 1/31/20, 2/28/20, 3/27/20, 4/24/20, 5/29/20, 6/26/20 and 9/25/20. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. An aptitude test will be conducted at the time of application. Testing and processing will be held until 10:00 a.m. Mail-in or online applications will not be accepted.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship. Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship (this could be a birth certificate, state issued driver’s license, or any state or federal identification showing date of birth).
  • Must have a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must provide DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must pass the JATC Basic Assessment Skills Exam (a reading and math comprehension exam administered during the application process). Must score a minimum of 23 out of 28 on assessment test.
  • Must be willing to travel within the Jurisdiction of Local Union #1, which includes all five boroughs of New York City, Nassau, and Suffolk counties.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to job sites and attend required classes at the approved school.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
  • Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade(s), which may include:
    • Working with hand tools and power tools.
    • Exposure to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages, and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing, climbing, walking, repeated squatting, stretching, and bending.
    • Working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. 
    • Working in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
    • Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
    • Working from ladders, scaffolds, and personnel lifts.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
