Matchups Set for First Round of ECAC Hockey Tournament

Tickets for the March 20-21 ECAC Men’s Ice Hockey Championship Tournament in Lake Placid Available Now

ALBANY, N.Y. - The ECAC Hockey men’s regular-season is a wrap, and first round matchups for the upcoming tournament are set. Four series begin Friday, as seeds 5-12 will battle it out for a chance to continue on to the quarterfinal round. 


The top four seeds that have earned a bye to the quarterfinal round this year are Cornell (No. 1), Clarkson (No. 2), Quinnipiac (No. 3), and RPI (No. 4). As the top seed, the Big Red will face the lowest remaining seed in the tournament after the first round, while the Engineers will host the highest remaining seed.


First Round Matchup: No. 12 St. Lawrence at No. 5 Harvard

These teams split their season series, with each squad holding serve on their home ice. The Crimson picked up a 3-1 win on January 17, using goals from Jack Drury, Colton Kerfoot, and Reilly Walsh to put the game away. The Saints offense came alive in the most recent matchup, as they notched the first four goals of the contest and held off a third-period comeback attempt by Harvard to earn a 6-3 win. The last time these teams met in the post-season was the 2016 ECAC Hockey semi-finals, when Harvard won 2-1 in overtime.

First-Round Matchup: No. 11 Princeton at No. 6 Dartmouth

The Big Green swept the regular-season matchup against Princeton, winning 3-1 at home on November 9, and 4-3 at Princeton on January 3. Will Graber scored two goals, including third period game-winner in the first matchup. The most recent game featured seven different goal scorers and was capped off by an overtime game-winner from Drew O’Connor. The last post-season series between Dartmouth and Princeton was in the first-round of the 2015 league tournament when the Big Green won 3-2 and 2-0 in Hanover.

First-Round Matchup: No. 10 Union at No. 7 Yale

Yale took both games against Union in the regular-season, outscoring the Dutchmen 7-0 in the process. Corbin Kaczperski was in net for both contests, as the senior made 47 combined saves in the two shutouts. Curtis Hall, who is Yale's leading scorer this season, made an impact on both games, totaling four points (2G, 2A) in the season series. Yale and Union last met in the post-season in 2013 when the Dutchmen won 5-0 in the ECAC Hockey semifinals.

First-Round Matchup: No. 9 Brown at No. 8 Colgate

Despite the Raiders being the higher seed in this contest, Brown swept the season series in 2019-20, winning 4-1 in Hamilton on November 9 and 3-1 at home on February 21. Justin Jallen scored two goals in the first meeting, while Tyler Penner and Paul McAvoy were the goal scorers in the two contests for Colgate. The last post-season matchup between these teams was in 2005 when Colgate swept the quarterfinal round two games to none.

On March 20-21, the conference’s top four post season teams will come to Lake Placid, N.Y. to play in the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament. The winner of this tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament. The two semifinal games will take place Friday, March 20, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and the championship game will be played Saturday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m.
