Lake Placid Winter 2014 Event Season Schedule

(Feb. 10, 2014) --- Below is a rundown of many of the event’s on ORDA’s winter 2014 events’ calendar for your planning purposes. Dates and schedules are subject to change.

Feb. 18 – The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will take fan interaction to a new level when the 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to Olympic Center.  Online voting is now open at harlemglobetrotters.com/rule, where all fans can choose which new game-changing rules they want to see in their hometown.  Game time is 7 p.m.

March 8 – Lake Placid Loppet and Kort Loppet.  Nordic skiers will converge on the cross-country ski trails at Mt. van Hoevenberg to compete in the 32nd Lake Placid Loppet. Open to classical and freestyle skiers, the Loppet is a 50k race (31-miles) through the 1980 Olympic ski trails.  The vertical climb is just under 3,700 feet.

The 25k Kort Loppet, also open for classical and freestyle skiers, features a vertical climb of 1,850 feet.  The Lake Placid Loppet is part of the American Ski Marathon Series.

March 8-15 – Lake Placid, N.Y. and Wilmington, N.Y. will play host to the 2014 United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championship™. The five-day long event brings together athletes from across all four disciplines of alpine Skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding as they convene in the region for competitions that will determine the top collegiate teams across the nation.

March 20-22 – ECAC Men’s Hockey Championship Tournament.  The ECAC Hockey championships return for the first time to Lake Placid since 2002. The winner of this tournament receives an automatic bid to play in the NCAA championship tournament.  Last season, ECAC schools Yale and Quinnipiac squared off in the national title game, with the Bulldogs coming away with their first national crown.  The ECAC Men’s Hockey championship tournament will be played on the famed Herb Brooks Arena 1980 Rink.

Other events this fall and winter include U.S. Ski Jumping Competition, Feb. 12; Nor/Am Aerials, Feb. 15-16; North/Am Biathlon, Feb. 22-23; U.S. College Ski and Snowboard National Championships, March 9-15; FIBT Sliding School, March 17-22; FIBT International Bobsled Racing, March 24-29

Established in 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) was created by the State of New York to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface, Belleayre and Gore Mountain ski areas; the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; the Olympic speedskating oval, Olympic jumping complex and Olympic arena. As host to international and national championships, the Authority has brought millions of athletes, spectator and participants to the region, resulting in significant economic development.
