New Year’s College Hockey Highlights Division III Men’s Ice Hockey

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Division III men’s ice hockey returns to Lake Placid, N.Y and the Famed Herb Brook Arena 1980 Rink. From January 2-3, 2015, four of the east’s top teams will square off in the New Year’s College Hockey Classic. 

 

The Classic will bring back two brothers, who grew up in Lake Placid, and are now coaches, Middlebury’s Bill Beaney and Southern Maine’s Jeff Beaney.  

 

Bill has guided the Panther’s program for 28 seasons and has led Middlebury to eight national championships.  This season Bill’s squad is off to a 2-4-2 start.

 

Jeff is in his 27th season on the Southern Maine bench and his 254 wins are the most in school history.  His Huskies are off to a 1-8 start to begin the 2014-’15 season.

 

The other schools participating include St. Michaels College and Hobart. The Purple Knights have opened the season skating to a 4-2-1 record. One of those victories came against Southern Maine, when they blanked the Huskies 2-0 in mind-November.

 

Hobart is 6-4 overall after winning five of their last seven games.

 

Southern Maine and Hobart open New Year’s College Hockey Classic play, January 2, when they square off at 4 p.m. The 7 p.m. game pits Middlebury against St. Michaels.

 

On January 3, Southern Maine and St. Michaels will face-off at 4 p.m., followed by Middlebury and Hobart at 7 p.m.
