Statement from MTA Chief Innovation Officer Mark Dowd on the MTA's Federal Transit Administration Grant

The following is a quote from MTA Chief Innovation Officer Mark Dowd on the awarding by the Federal Transit Administration of a $600,000 grant to the MTA to examine how people move and how COVID-19 travels throughout the metropolitan region by studying aerosol dispersion in transit.

Statement from Mark Dowd, MTA Chief Innovation Officer:

"This grant from the FTA is great news for the MTA, our customers, and our workers. We intend to use it to further our work around aerosols and bring together a team of public health and transportation experts to review studies and data, and provide recommendations that will help create additional layers of safety for New Yorkers during the pandemic." 

On Background:

  • This funding joins millions of dollars dedicated to related studies for the MTA by DOE, DHS, and EPA.
  • The MTA has been a pioneer in the use of technology to fight the spread of aeresols in public transit, including using advanced filtration.
