OGS COMMISSIONER MOY ANNOUNCES LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION AT THE EMPIRE STATE PLAZA TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1

Event Will Feature Free Entertainment and Vendors Selling Food and Beverages

NYS Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced that OGS will host its second annual Lunar New Year celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, on the Empire State Plaza’s south concourse. The event is free to attend and will feature free entertainment, giveaways, fun activities, and vendors selling food and beverages.

“Lunar New Year is a great time of family and togetherness,” Commissioner Moy said, “I want to welcome everyone to the Empire State Plaza to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with some exciting cultural performances by community organizations and great food. I want to thank the Taiwanese American Association of the Capital District, the Chinese Community Center, the Albany Chapter of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association, and all the vendors and sponsors who are making this event possible.”

As part of the Lunar New Year observance, OGS is transforming the south end of the Empire State Plaza concourse, between the main food court and the entrance to the Corning Tower. The display includes planter boxes filled with plants and flowers provided by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and Trader Joe’s, a colorful display of paper lanterns, informational presentations, and moon gates — a traditional architectural element commonly found in Chinese gardens.

The event begins at 10 a.m. with representatives of the Taiwanese American Association of the Capital District, the Chinese Community Center, and the Albany Chapter of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association offering information about their organizations and the Lunar New Year, as well as interactive activities, including papercutting, games, calligraphy, and more.

The live entertainment is scheduled to begin following an official program at 11:30 a.m., with performances of the Lion and Techno Prince dances by the Taiwanese American Association of the Capital District and martial arts demonstrations by the Chinese Community Center. Food vendors will be selling prepared food, including Two Little Dumplings, which will be selling frozen dumplings, Kuma Ani, and Pho Yum.
