Long Island Rail Road crews this weekend, October 20 and 21, 2018, will perform routine rail safety testing on the Port Washington Branch in the railroad’s ongoing efforts to ensure continued safety and service reliability. The rail safety tests are performed by the Sperry Rail Car, a self-propelled train car fitted with ultrasonic and induction test equipment and is designed to detect internal defects inside the running rails that are not readily visible to the eye. Defects that are found will be corrected immediately by LIRR track maintenance workers. To allow this important work to take place, buses will substitute for trains on the Port Washington Branch between Great Neck and Port Washington during this time. Details on service changes are below.
