DEC ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ACCESS ROAD IN INDEPENDENCE RIVER WILD FOREST

Big Otter Lake Road Closed to Motorized Vehicles Following Spring Washout

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the temporary closure of Big Otter Lake Road to motorized vehicles, in the town of Greig, Lewis County. The road, which provides access to Big Otter Lake in the  Independence River Wild Forest, sustained damage from a spring washout.

The road remains open for non-motorized use. Visitors should use caution when crossing damaged sections of the roadway. DEC advises the public to use the Pine Lake Trailhead parking area when accessing the road.

When crossing through private land, visitors should remain on the town road and respect neighboring landowners.

Questions regarding the closure can be directed to Michael Giocondo at the DEC Region 6 Lowville Office at (315) 376-3521.
