DEC ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF 3456 ONEIDA STREET CLEANUPAccepting Comments on Proposed Removal from State’s Superfund Program Accepted through Nov. 29 |

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced the completion of a comprehensive cleanup at the 3456 Oneida Street site in the town of New Hartford, Oneida County. In addition, DEC is proposing to remove the site from the state’s Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites, commonly known as the State Superfund Program. “New York’s State Superfund Program successfully works to identify, investigate, and clean up contaminated sites that present a threat to public health and the environment so that communities are protected and can thrive,” said Commissioner Seggos. “DEC is working aggressively to address historic contamination in communities throughout the state, and this property has been transformed so that it can help contribute to the local economy once again.” DEC provided strict oversight of a comprehensive cleanup of the site on Bleachery Road in the village of Chadwicks to address contamination caused by historic industrial activity. Starting in approximately 1980, operations at the property reportedly included the cleaning of industrial machines containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) oils, as well as the discharge of fluids containing PCBs to the ground surface and an unnamed tributary. Cleanup actions included the removal of PCB-contaminated soil and sediment on- and off-site, as well as the removal of construction and demolition debris. Areas of the on-site unnamed tributary and off-site Sauquoit Creek that were disturbed during cleanup activity have been restored and all areas of the site now meet unrestricted or residential use soil cleanup objectives, the state’s highest cleanup standards. DEC, in consultation with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) has determined the site no longer presents a significant threat to public health or the environment. As part of DEC’s ongoing commitment to transparency, public comments will be accepted on the state’s proposal to delist the site until Nov. 29, 2019.
