NYC Transit Providing Additional Service on Several Train and Bus Lines to Accommodate Ridership Demand

Additional A, D, E & F Trains During ‘Shoulders’ of Peak, Plus Additional Weekend Bus Service in Queens

NYC Transit President Andy Byford today announced that the agency will be providing additional trips on several train and bus lines as part of regular, ongoing efforts to accommodate changes in ridership and demand.  The subway additions, on the A, D, E and F lines on weekdays mostly during the hours immediately following or preceding rush hours, will go into effect in November.  The bus additions, on weekends in Queens, will go into effect in July.  The changes will result in shorter wait times and reduced crowding on the lines at certain times.

“We’re thrilled to add some additional service for subway and bus riders, and much bigger improvements are on the horizon” said President Byford.  “We regularly tweak schedules based on changes in demand and operating conditions, and the comprehensive plan I’m announcing this week will outline the path towards even more significant improvements to service that will be felt by all of our customers.”

The following subway service will be added in November:

  • Three additional southbound A trains on weekdays between approximately 8:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
  • One additional northbound D train on weekdays between approximately 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Three additional northbound D trains on weekdays between approximately 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
  • Three additional southbound E trains on weekdays between approximately 10:30 a.m. and noon
  • One additional northbound F train on weekdays between approximately 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
  • Two additional southbound F trains on weekdays between approximately 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  • One additional southbound F train on weekdays between approximately 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Two additional southbound F trains on weekdays between approximately 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

All the additional trains will make round trips, leading to additional opposite-direction trips as well.

The following weekend bus service will be added in July:

  • Saturday Q6 frequency will increase throughout the entire day.
  • Saturday Q8 frequency will increase in midday, afternoon and evening periods.
  • Saturday Q29 frequency will increase in the afternoon period.
  • Saturday Q47 frequency will increase throughout the entire day.
  • Saturday Q49 frequency will increase in the morning, afternoon and evening periods.
  • Saturday Q101 frequency will increase in the midday and afternoon periods.
  • Sunday Q65 frequency will increase throughout the day.

Bus schedules are regularly reviewed and adjusted based on rider demand and operating conditions such as traffic and compliance with bus lane restrictions.  Accordingly, Saturday Q29 frequency will also decrease in the morning period, to reflect light ridership.

Work on a comprehensive, systemwide redesign of the entire bus route network has begun, as noted in the NYC Transit Bus Plan.  The first segment of the redesign focuses on Staten Island express buses.  The Bronx is the next borough to be studied, as announced by President Byford today in the MTA Board’s Transit Committee.

President Byford also noted today that a comprehensive plan to modernize and improve all aspects of NYC Transit – including the framework for how to allow for more significant additions to subway service – will be released on Wednesday.
