Boilermakers Recruit Apprentices

Oswego, NY (February 25, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Boilermakers Northeast Local Union #175 will conduct a recruitment from March 5, 2014 through March 3, 2015 for five boilermaker (construction) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the five openings listed for boilermaker apprentices represent the total number for all regions – Central, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, North Country, and Southern Tier regions.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #175, 28 West Bridge Street, Oswego, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  If the first Tuesday of the month is a holiday, applications will be available on the first Wednesday of the month between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  Proof of age will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must verbally attest that he/she is physically able to do the work of a boilermaker, which may include:
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working at various heights above the ground.
    • Working in nuclear facilities.
    • Working under other hazardous conditions.
    • Traveling out of town to work.
  • Must attend and complete related instruction courses.
  • Must be willing to submit to a drug/alcohol test, at the expense of the sponsor, within 48 hours of signing the Apprenticeship Agreement.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
