GOVERNOR CUOMO ENCOURAGES NEW YORKERS TO VISIT LAKE PLACID THIS SUMMER

Historic Winter Olympic Destination Features Endless Opportunities for Outdoor Recreation during the Summer Months

LAKE PLACID, NY. --- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today encouraged New Yorkers to visit Lake Placid this summer to take advantage of the various activities and attractions that the Village offers.

“The North Country is home to world class attractions and features activities and destinations for visitors of all ages during every season of the year,” Governor Cuomo said. “Lake Placid has so much to offer and I encourage New Yorkers and visitors alike to visit this gem of the Adirondacks this summer.”

This weekend, June 3 and 4, nearly 1,000 mountain and road cyclists will gather at Whiteface Mountain to compete in both the Wilmington Whiteface 100K mountain bike race and the Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike Race. Additionally, next Sunday, June 11, approximately 1,200 runners, some with dreams of qualifying for the prestigious Boston Marathon, assemble in Lake Placid to run in the scenic 13th annual Lake Placid Marathon & Half-Marathon.

Other events this summer in Lake Placid include:

Below is a list of attractions and activities available to visitors:

Lake Placid Bobsled Experience

Guests can experience the thrill of shooting down the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games’ bobsled track. Led by a professional driver and brakeman, the Lake Placid Bobsled Experience gives adventure-seekers a chance to zip through the storied track’s curves and straightaways, reaching speeds of more than 60 miles per hour. More information is available here.

Discover Biathlon

This one-hour-long program allows visitors the chance to shoot at targets used during the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. The program includes safety instruction and tests the skills of guests as they shoot a real, competition-style x22 caliber rifle at targets 50 meters away. Visitors also have the option to participate in a paintball biathlon. More information is available here.

Whiteface Mountain

Located in Wilmington, Whiteface Mountain offers unparalleled skiing and snowboarding during the winter, but during the summer features spectacular views of the Adirondack Mountains, Vermont and Canada. Summertime guests can take the Cloudsplitter Gondola to the summit of Little Whiteface or can drive, bike and hike to the summit New York’s fifth highest peak via the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway. The highway, predating the ski resort by about 20 years, is eight-miles from the base to the summit of the mountain and is 4,867 feet above sea level. More information is available here.

Senator Betty Little said, “Lake Placid offers so much to do and summer is an ideal time to take it all in. A trip to this beautiful and historic Olympic village is a chance to experience something new, something fun and something to always be remembered.”

Randy Preston, chair of the Essex County board of supervisors, said, “I thank the Governor for his continued investment and support of the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway and the Adirondack region. The area is truly becoming a year-round destination for all travelers.”

Lake Placid Mayor Craig H. Randall said, “Lake Placid is truly a treasure of the Adirondacks with countless options for families and nature lovers to enjoy the great outdoors. I urge New Yorkers to come visit us here in Lake Placid and to see for themselves the top-notch destinations that we have here right in our backyard.”
