Lake Placid’s Summer Ice Dance Competition Turns International

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- For more than a half-century the Lake Placid Summer Ice Dancing Competition has brought together some of the United States’ best ice dancers.  Look down the list at some of the country’s top teams, and no doubt that at one time they skated in this event. It’s a star-studded list that includes 2010 Olympic champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

Always known as the largest U.S. summer ice dance competition, the July 29-Aug. 1 event has expanded to include an international field of skaters from Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia and Spain. These skaters, along with several from the United States, will debut competition programs, ahead of the beginning of the 2015-’16 figure skating competition season, set to begin in September, while also competing for International Skating Union (ISU) technical scores.

Skaters in each discipline need to obtain a minimum technical score at international competitions so that they are eligible to compete at junior worlds and worlds.  If they don’t achieve a technical score at an international event, they are not eligible to compete at junior world or the world championships.

The international competition begins Thursday, July 30, when junior level skaters perform their short dance program at 1 p.m., while the senior short dance program is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.  The junior international champion will be crowned following the free dance, which begins, Friday, July 31, at 1:30 p.m., while the senior free dance is slated for 7 p.m.

The Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships will run:

Wednesday, July 29, from 4 - 8:30 p.m.

Thursday, July 30, from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Friday, July 31, 8 a.m.- 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.

Daily tickets are available for $10 for adults and $7 for juniors and seniors. All event tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for juniors and seniors.
