Mountain Updates

Whiteface Mountain is putting the finishing touches on several off-season capital projects as the resort gears up for the 2014-’15 skiing and riding season, set to begin Friday, Nov. 28, conditions permitting.  They include:

Kids Kampus

Whiteface Mountain’s learn to ski area for youngsters has been renamed and rebranded. It’s now called the Bear Den Mountain. The lodge has also been renovated and the deck has been converted to indoor space. This has allowed for expanded ticketing and rental areas, while creating a better flow of traffic and creating more room for skiers, riders and families.

Trail Widening

Both the Upper Valley (intermediate) and the Wilmington (intermediate) trails have been widened. The Upper Valley Trail, which is located off of the Facelift Chair, has been widened by 25 feet to the skiers’ right, while more space has also been added to the skiers’ right of the Wilmington Trail’s long straight-away, just ahead of the Lookout Below trail.

Base Lodge Expansion

The lodge’s outdoor ticket booth has been removed. It’s been replaced by a new locker and changing area with direct access to the Mixing Bowl trail, the Cloudsplitter Gondola or the Facelift quad chair. The new space will accommodate up to 40 to 50 additional skiers and riders. New furniture has also been brought into the Cloudspin Lounge.

Snowmaking

Whiteface has added another 100 low-energy, high-efficiency snowguns to its fleet. The resort has also upgraded its pumping capacity from the pump house.  This is a multi-stage project that will take a few years to complete, but once it’s finished it will allow for the use of more efficient snow guns by distributing water at a higher pressure.

Grooming

This summer, Whiteface Mountain purchased a new Pisten Bully Park Bully Pro Stealth Edition, which is one of only two in the country. The Pisten Bully will be used to help maintain the mountain’s five terrain parks. A new winch cat has also been added to the resort’s fleet.
