Media Advisory for Tuesday, September 23

GROUNDBREAKING AND ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING CATSKILL INTERPRETATIVE CENTER

WHAT: NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens will be joined by former Congressman Maurice Hinchey, local officials, community groups and guests to make an announcement regarding the Catskill Interpretative Center project.

WHO: Commissioner Martens will be joined by state and local elected officials including:

  • former Congressman Maurice Hinchey
  • Mayor Robert Stanley, Town of Shandaken
  • Catskill area partners

WHEN: Announcement: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 23

Followed by recreational access activity (for those interested): 4-mile hike at DEC’s Rochester Hollow ~ 12:00 p.m.

WHERE: Catskill Interpretive Center, Route 28, Mt. Tremper, in the Town of Shandaken, Ulster County. Event to be held outside site.

Light refreshments will be served following the event announcement. For those that opt to partake in the day’s activity, please be sure to bring proper supplies, attire and bagged lunch if desired.

HIKE: Following the announcement and time to eat a brown bag lunch, members of the media are invited to join Commissioner Martens and guests for a 4-mile hike at DEC’s Rochester Hollow that leads to the John Burrough’s monument. There is an elevation gain of approximately 750 feet over the course of the hike. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate attire to traverse rocky and muddy trails, including footwear with ankle support. Dress in layers, carry water and bring rain gear in the event of inclement weather. The trailhead is approximately a 10-15 minute car trip from the news conference location.
