Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Elmira, NY (April 11, 2014) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Electricians Local Union #139 will conduct a recruitment from May 9, 2014 through May 8, 2015 for 6 - 10 electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #139, 508 College Avenue, Elmira, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the second Friday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applicants must apply in person.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old to apply. 
  • Must be at least 18 years old prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma, a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), or at least a two-year associate degree.
  • Must have successfully completed one year of high school algebra or one post-high school algebra course. 
  • Must provide an official transcript for high school and post-high school education and training, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a physical exam and a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture. 
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various worksites and related instruction.
  • Must qualify for an interview using the Electrical Trade’s Aptitude Test.  Sample Aptitude Test questions can be found online at: http://www.njatc.org/training/apprenticeship/sample/sample_test.html
  • Must attest that he/she is capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade, which may include:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, and towers of various heights.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces, such as attics, manholes, and crawlspaces.
    • Lifting a minimum of 50 pounds.
    • Working outdoors year-round, in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to read and understand English.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.
  • Must reside, for at least six months, within the geographic jurisdiction of Local Union #139, which includes the following:
    • All of Chemung County.
    • All of Steuben County.
    • In Allegany County – The townships of Allen, Almond, Alfred, Andover, Birdsall, Burns, Granger, Grove, Hume, Independence, Ward, Wellsville, West Almond, and Willing.  Also, that portion of Amity, Angelica, Belfast, Caneadea, and Scio townships east of the Genesee River.
    • In Schuyler County – The townships of Dix, Montour, Orange, Reading, and Tyrone.
    • In Tioga County – The townships of Barton and Nichols.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
