Albany, NY (April 1, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Empire State Carpenters Local Union #370 will conduct a recruitment from May 1, 2014 through April 30, 2015 for 15 carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for the Capital, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions.  This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Green, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington.

Applications can be obtained in person at the Local Union #370 Training Center, 27 Warehouse Row, Albany, NY from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be received no later than April 30, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 17 years old.  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must attest in writing that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which includes:
  • Following established safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment.
  • Shaping or cutting materials to specified measurements using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Assembling and fastening materials to make framework or props using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Building or repairing cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings.
  • Using woodworking machines, carpenters’ hand tools, and power tools.
  • Erecting scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Installing structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, flooring, trim, or hardware using carpenters’ hand and power tools.
  • Working on scaffolds.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working under conditions of inclement weather, such as rain, snow, cold, heat, and direct sunlight.
  • Performing constant repetitive motions.
  • Climbing and working from heights.
  • Lifting items over a set weight.
  • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
• Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must have a driver’s license and/or reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction. 
• Must reside in the jurisdiction of Local Union #370, which includes the counties of Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Saratoga, Schenectady, Albany, Greene, Rensselaer, Washington, Warren, and Columbia.
• Must participate in an interview, if selected.
• Must take and pass the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee entry math test.
• Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
