DEC and United States Geological Survey Kick-Off New Water Supply Sustainability Study

Study is Part of Governor Cuomo’s Multi-Pronged Effort to Protect Groundwater Resources on Long Island

WHAT: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with the United States Geological Study (USGS), mark the official kick-off of the Long Island Water Supply Sustainability Study (Study).

WHO:  DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher, USGS Director of NY Water Science Center Robert Breault and other regional USGS hydrologists and regional water managers.

WHAT: USGS personnel will provide an overall summary of Long Island’s groundwater resources and outline the goals and purpose of the study.

WHY:  The Study will create an updated and enhanced regional groundwater-flow modeling tool.  This tool will enable regional water managers and water districts to collaboratively manage the region's groundwater resources and address concerns regarding over-pumping, saltwater intrusion, plume migration from contamination sites, changes in groundwater flow to surface waters, and assist with a regional determination of sustainable groundwater use.

WHERE: Suffolk County Water Authority Education Center, 260 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, NY 11788.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.
