Stewart Manor LIRR station is receiving a slate of enhancements designed to improve the customer experience as well as strengthen safety initiatives at this stop along the Hempstead Branch. Two brand new platforms will be built, along with new platform shelters featuring artwork displays, LED lights throughout the station, new signage, security cameras, Wi-Fi accessibility, and help points, which consist of a button to summon for help in a medical or other emergency situation. New light poles will also be installed, along with new stairs and concrete work, and new speaker systems to improve station announcements and customer communications.

Work to install the first of two new platforms at Stewart Manor will begin January 16, 2018. To fully replace both platforms, the work will be completed in four consecutive phases. Customers will be able to board and disembark trains in both directions at all times for the duration of all phases of the project, as crews will work on one half of one platform at a time.

This project will complement an overhaul of the Stewart Manor station building that was completed in summer 2017, which was made possible by $2.071 million in state Capital Program Review Board funding secured by State Sen. Kemp Hannon. The station building rehabilitation included a fully renovated waiting room, construction of two ADA compliant bathrooms with all new fixtures, new wall, tile flooring and ceiling finishes, new LED lighting, signage, doors, windows, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical components. On the building’s exterior, deteriorated soffits were replaced, while new soffit-mounted lighting was installed along with corporate signage, and fresh coats of paint on the exterior walls. The underpass also received treatments such as wall and ceiling panel replacement and new lighting.

During the first phase of platform work at Stewart Manor, the west end of Platform B, on the south side, up to the underpass will be closed to the public beginning the morning of Tuesday, January 16, 2018 until mid-March 2018. During this time, customers should be prepared to board the first four cars when going eastbound and the last four cars while traveling westbound.

Pedestrian traffic will be limited on parts of the platform being worked on at that given time. Construction will not impact train service, nor will traffic detours be required, as all work will take place on LIRR property.

Stewart Manor is just one of the 16 LIRR stations on Long Island that will get major infrastructure, functional and aesthetic upgrades under Governor Cuomo’s Enhanced Stations Initiative. Other stations include: In Nassau County: Baldwin, Bellmore, Farmingdale, Great Neck, Merrick, Syosset, Valley Stream; In Suffolk County: Brentwood, Deer Park, East Hampton, Northport, Ronkonkoma, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, and Wyandanch.

Enhancements for each station will be customized to the needs of a particular station and constructed with minimal disruptions to customers and the community.
