Media Availability to Preview Upcoming Adaptive and Inclusive Birding Event

What: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is teaming up with Rochester Accessible Adventures and Braddock Bay Raptor Research for an adaptive and inclusive birding event. On Monday, presenters will hold a media preview for a workshop being held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the town of Greece's Braddock Bay Park to demonstrate different tools used by birders of all ages and abilities. Binoculars, monoculars, wheelchair harnesses, and customized pillows for wheelchairs will be on display. Officials from DEC and Rochester Accessible Adventures will be available to answer any questions about Tuesday's free event.

When: Media Availability on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021 at 11 a.m.

Where: Braddock Bay Park, 199 East Manitou Road, Rochester - Meet at the Donald Schlieter Lodge

Why: The outdoors are for everyone to enjoy and DEC is committed to improving access for people of all abilities across the State. The Americans with Disabilities Act and DEC's accessibility efforts are succeeding to help more people participate and enjoy the benefits of DEC's services, programs, and activities. On Tuesday afternoon from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the same Braddock Bay location, people of all abilities are invited to learn about these efforts and use specialized equipment like binoculars and wheelchair-accessible trails to enjoy birding.

With our partners, DEC continues to increase the range of accessible opportunities available for people to fish, boat, hunt, canoe, picnic, horseback ride, hike, and camp. This is achieved in a variety of ways, including through physical design, alternative forms of communication, inclusive programs, and individual accommodation. For more information: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/34035.html
