New York State Office of General Services Commissioner Jeanette Moy today announced the opening of an LGBTQ+ History Month Exhibit at the State Capitol. The exhibit, “Flag in the Map: Charting Rainbow Flag Stories,” reaffirms the Rainbow Flag’s power to inspire members of LGBTQ+ communities across the globe. The exhibit will remain on view through January 2, 2023 in the East Gallery on the Capitol’s second floor.

“LGBTQ+ History Month celebrates the great advancements made by the LGBTQ+ community toward equal rights since the Stonewall  Uprising in 1969, which launched the LGBTQ+ rights movement right here in New York State,” Commissioner Moy said. “The ‘Flag in the Map: Charting Rainbow Flag Stories’ exhibit demonstrates how the pride Flag designed by Gilbert Baker has become a universal symbol of the movement, especially in parts of the world where members of the LGBTQ+ community continue to struggle against discrimination.”

“Flag in the Map: Charting Rainbow Flag Stories ” is a traveling exhibition from the Gilbert Baker Foundation that was the product of a collaborative educational project between the foundation and the global human rights organization ReportOUT. Baker, an artist, designer, and educator, is credited with creating the LGBTQ Rainbow Flag in 1978.

The Flag in the Map project documented people flying their Pride Flags in all parts of the world. Participants were asked to share what the Pride Flag means to them. A selection of the responses is displayed in the exhibit, which has traveled around the world.
