Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Albany, NY (May 1, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 will conduct a recruitment from June 2, 2014 through June 01, 2015 for 10 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person at Local Union #83, 718 Third Street, Albany, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every Monday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications may also be obtained at www.smwlocal83.org.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).  This must include a passing grade in Algebra, a passing grade in Math I, or a minimum of a 47 on the math portion of the GED.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a sheet metal worker, which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to noise and respiratory irritants. 
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment.
    • Working off of ladders and scaffolds at various heights.  
  • Must have a valid New York State driver’s license.  Apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must take the U.S. Department of Labor BOLT Reading and Arithmetic Achievement tests.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #83 for at least six months prior to application.  This includes the following counties: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
