Insulation & Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (May 23, 2013) -- The International Association of Heat & Frost Insulators & Allied Workers, Local Union #12, will conduct a recruitment from May 20, 2013 through June 3, 2013 for 10 insulation and asbestos worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at Local Union #12, 25-19 43rd Avenue, Long Island City, NY, on Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Completed applications must be received by 2:00 p.m. on June 12, 2013.  This is a limited recruitment. Applications will be given out during the recruitment period or until 100 applications have been issued, whichever comes first.

The Committee requires that applicants:

    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Must be a high school graduate or have a general equivalency diploma (GED) - a copy of H.S. diploma and transcript, or H.S. equivalency (GED) certificate and official copy of test results is required with the completed application.
    • Must pass a physical exam paid for by the Union, attesting to their ability to perform the work, once accepted for probationary apprenticeship.
    • Must pass a certified drug test paid for by Local Union #12. The drug test will be given to those under final consideration for each class. Once enrolled in the apprenticeship program, each apprentice will have a random, yearly drug test paid for by the Union.
    • Must take an aptitude test administered by NYS Employment Service.
    • Must score a minimum of 55 points in the recruitment process. Anyone who scores less than 55 points will be dropped from further consideration.
    • Must provide an original DD-214 (military discharge papers) with seal, if applicable.
    • Must provide for own transportation to and from work and school.
    • Must provide own tools and work clothes (approx. $500.00).
    • Must submit a signed application.
    • Must submit a signed trade affidavit.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
