MTA Announces OMNY Coming to the 2/5 and 6 Lines in the Bronx Latest Expansion of Popular Contactless Payment System Remains on Time and On Budget
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the next group of stations set to receive the OMNY contactless fare payment system during the month of February. Customers along the / and lines in the Bronx will experience this month’s expansion, which ups the total number of stations that have OMNY to more than 180. The entire subway system and all MTA buses remain on pace to receive OMNY by the end of the year. “The OMNY rollout remains on time and on budget and the rates at which people are adopting it as their preferred approach for payment continue to exceed even our most optimistic projections,” said Al Putre, OMNY Executive. “This month, hundreds of thousands of our customers in the Bronx will get to experience the benefits of avoiding the lines at their MetroCard machine and paying with a simple tap of their phone, wearable device or contactless credit card.” February’s rollout will first bring OMNY readers to line stations in the Bronx from 3 Av-138 St all the way to the end of the line at Pelham Bay Park. The February expansion then moves to the / line, beginning at 3 Av-149 St extending all the way to the end of the line at Wakefield 241 St. The OMNY system has recorded more than 7 million taps since its pilot phase debuted at a small number of stations along the Lexington Avenue line in late May. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT MTA FARE PAYMENTS AND OMNY: A list of all subway stations and bus routes where OMNY is currently in use is at this link: https://omny.info/system-rollout The MetroCard was first tested in the system in 1993, debuting to the larger public in January 1994. All turnstiles were MetroCard-enabled by May 1997 and all buses began accepting it by the end of 1995. Tokens were sold until April 2003 and acceptance was discontinued that May in subway stations and that December on buses. OMNY readers accept contactless cards from companies such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay. Following the completion of OMNY installation at all subway turnstiles and on buses, the MTA will introduce all remaining fare options, including unlimited ride passes, reduced fares, student fares, and more. In 2021, the MTA will introduce the OMNY Card in the OMNY app and at retail locations throughout the New York region. Beginning in 2021, the MTA will install new vending machines at locations throughout the system. Starting in late 2021, MTA will start to roll out OMNY to PATH and AirTrain JFK stations. Only after the OMNY project is fully complete in 2023 will the MTA say goodbye to the MetroCard. Paying with cash will always be an option.
