Display Shines Light on Global Fight to Save Elephants from Extinction and Fight to End Illegal Trade

What: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos and DEC Division of Law Enforcement Captain Jesse Paluch join New York State Education Department Commissioner Betty Rosa and leaders from the New York State Museum to unveil an important new display featuring elephant ivory seized during a statewide crackdown on the illegal ivory trade, primarily in New York City.

While most of the nearly two tons of ivory was crushed in New York’s Central Park in 2017, leftover pieces, including two large elephant tusks, will now be displayed at the museum.

Officially open to the public tomorrow, the display is a reminder of the rampant slaughter of the African elephant and rhinoceros that continues at alarming rates today and a call to action to visitors to join the fight against poachers, traffickers, buyers, and sellers.
