COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Oct. 17, 2016) – U.S. Figure Skating announced the selection of Lake Placid, New York, as the host city for 2017 Skate America. Competition is scheduled for Nov. 24-26, 2017, and will be held at the historic 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.

“U.S. Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Lake Placid for this prestigious international competition,” U.S. Figure Skating President Sam Auxier said. “The community has a rich history in figure skating and we are excited to celebrate part of the Olympic season in Lake Placid.”

Lake Placid, which hosted the inaugural Skate America in 1979, has put on the event four times (1979, 1981-82, 2009).  The state of New York has hosted Skate America six times. U.S. Figure Skating will work with the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) to plan the event.

“Over the last several years bringing Skate America back to Lake Placid has been a focus of this organization,” said ORDA chairman Pat Barrett. “The Lake Placid community takes extreme pride in its figure skating history and through Skate America, as well as other competitions, it’s our opportunity to showcase it.”

Skate America, traditionally the first of six stops on the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, will be the sixth and final competition of the 2017 Grand Prix Series. Other stops on the Grand Prix Series include Skate Canada International, Rostelecom Cup, Trophée de France, Cup of China and NHK Trophy. Skaters earn points throughout the Grand Prix Series to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final each December.

The event will feature three days of competition in ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dance. The field of competitors will include 60 world-class athletes, including Olympic and World competitors and national champions.

Past Skate America titlists include five-time World champion and two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan and Olympic champions Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek and Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

2017 Skate America tickets will be on sale the week of December 15. For more information, visit www.2017skateamerica.com.

The 2016 Grand Prix Series begins Friday at Progressive Skate America. Sixty athletes will descend on Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, for this prestigious international competition.
